A roll back of existing state and local real estate conveyance taxes.
Thousands of home sellers and buyers across Connecticut are struggling to make ends meet in this difficult economy. Unfortunately some state legislators and municipal officials are pushing to make what was designed to be a temporary sales tax on home sales permanent.
This so-called real estate conveyance tax is extremely regressive, based on sale price and not ability to pay. This tax is even more damaging in the current real estate market where many homeowners are selling at a loss. Proponents of the tax claim it is imposed "without costing the state a dime," but the tax costs Connecticut home sellers millions of dollars each year.
Homefront Connecticut believes the existing real estate conveyance tax is bad policy and unfair to the hardworking homeowners of our state. Rather than passing legislation to make this unjust tax permanent, our legislators should finally keep their pledge to sunset the conveyance tax and restore fairness to Connecticut’s working families.
